This week’s parshah is Va’eira. As of last week, the Israelites are enslaved and G-d has just told Moses to command Pharaoh to “Let my people go.” In this parshah, G-d promises Moses that he will free the Israelites from slavery and take them to the Holy Land, as he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses and Aaron keep going to Pharaoh and saying, “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness.” Pharaoh keeps on refusing. In an effort to get Pharaoh to give in, G-d sends a series of plagues to the Egyptians: blood, frogs, lice, wild beasts, cattle disease, boils, and then hail. These are the first seven of the ten plagues. Pharaoh still refuses to let the Israelites go. Tune in next week for the final three plagues!
