D'var For Yitro

This week's D'var was written by Emma Freedlander.

Shabbat Shalom Everyone!
This weeks parshah is Yitro. It starts with Moshe's father-in-law, Jethrow, coming to the Israelites camp to drop Moshes wife and sons off. Then Jethrow advices Moshe to change the way he is running things. He tells him to create a system where he has people help him solve the Israelites problems that they would usually go to him for.
The Israelites were told they have been chosen by Hashem. They responded by saying they would do what Hashem tells them. Later, the Israelites went to the foot of
Mount Sinai where there is a lot of thunder and lightening. Then, a shofar
blasted as a sign for Moshe to go up the mountain. Hashem tells Moshe the
Ten Commandments: to believe in Hashem, not to worship idols, not to use Hashem's name in vain, to keep Shabbat, to honor your parents, not to murder, not to commit adultry, not to steal, not to give false testimony against your neighbor, and not to covet. The Israelites think all of this is too intense and asked for the Torah.
Have a great Shabbat everyone!

D'var For Bo

This week's D'var was written by Kenny Shuster.

This week's Parsha, Bo, talks about the last three plagues in Egypt: locusts devouring all the food, darkness enveloping Egypt, and the death of the firstborns of every Egyptian family. G-d then tells the Israelites to create a lunar calendar and to wipe the blood of a lamb on their door posts so He will pass over them when He kills the Egyptian firstborn. In anguish over the death of his son, Pharaoh finally allows the Israelites to leave, but not before getting their neighbors' gold, silver, and jewelry, thus fulfilling G-d's promise to Abraham that his descendants will leave slavery with riches. Then, the Israelites are commanded to consecrate the firstborn and to always remember the Exodus from Egypt.

SA/TO snap for January!

Every day in the U.S., we produce enough trash to equal the weight of the Empire State Building. We throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour, produce enough styrofoam cups annually to circle the earth 436 times and trash enough office paper to build a 12-foot wall from Los Angeles to New York City. We throw away 570 disposable diapers each second and toss out enough aluminum cans to rebuild our commercial air fleet every three months.
In two years, we fill enough garbage trucks to stretch from Earth all the way to the moon.  Be conscious of this and think green!

D'var For Va'Eira

This week's D'var was written by Michael Berelowitz.

This week’s parshah is Va’eira. As of last week, the Israelites are enslaved and G-d has just told Moses to command Pharaoh to “Let my people go.” In this parshah, G-d promises Moses that he will free the Israelites from slavery and take them to the Holy Land, as he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses and Aaron keep going to Pharaoh and saying, “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness.” Pharaoh keeps on refusing. In an effort to get Pharaoh to give in, G-d sends a series of plagues to the Egyptians: blood, frogs, lice, wild beasts, cattle disease, boils, and then hail. These are the first seven of the ten plagues. Pharaoh still refuses to let the Israelites go. Tune in next week for the final three plagues!
